I read today that the BBC trust is to investigate Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand's now infamous prank call to the actor Andrew Sachs. I'm going to save them a job.
What JR & RB (I'm not keep typing their names) did may have been a little bit too far for Radio 2, but given the style of comedy they both produce, it's hardly a surprise. Firstly, I'm not entirely convinced they did anything wrong. I'm a firm believer in comedy being just that. Comedy. It's supposed to be funny. You are NOT meant to take it seriously. Neither JR or RB really wanted Sachs to kill himself. It was a prank call, that was supposed to be taken tongue in cheek.
Of the 400,000 people who heard the show go out, only 2 complained. Not a typo. 2 people. And both of them only had a problem with JR's use of the "F" word. No mention of the other content of the calls. Once the liberal media had decided this was more newsworthy than the global financial crisis, the US Presidential Election and War in the Congo, the BBC received a further 38,000 complaints. Nearly as many as Big Brother received about Jade "Adolf" Goody. There is something wrong with this country.
The Granddaughter of Andrew Sachs, who Russell Brand had a relationship with, Georgina Baillie, was understandably outraged that someone had told her Granddad she's done a sex. After all, Georgina, also known as Voluptua from the Burlesque dancing group "The Satanic Sluts" wouldn't want Ol' Pappy to think she wasn't pure, would she? Pfft. After all her outrage at her sex life being revealed to her Grandfather, Voluptua did the only decent thing. She revealed her sex life to the whole country, by telling the red-tops about how inadequate RB was in bed. You go girl.
And what of Andrew Sachs? The man "terribly hurt" by these prank calls. A man who's entire career was based around a blatantly racist Spanish stereotype? The whole reason he is even in a position of enough fame to be receiving these calls is because he played a clumsy, incompetent, idiotic "Spick" Waiter.
If I was Spanish, I'd demand an apology. Well, if I was Spanish and humourless I mean. Personnally I think Fawlty Towers is hilarious, and is only comedy, after all.
